MAGNOLIA RESTAURANT CHANGES MENU, FOCUS, DÉCOR.

June 3, 2011—Julie and Ludger Szmania, owners of the 21-year-old SZMANIA’S Restaurant in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood, are introducing a new format to their popular and successful operation.

Beginning today, a new menu brings a decidedly steak-flavor to the restaurant in a move the couple described as “a year in the making.”

“Ludger (Chef Ludger Szmania), despite his roots in classical sauces and continental cuisine, has always been a meat guy,” said wife Julie. “I always wondered why he didn’t cook some of the favorite foods he likes to prepare at home, at the restaurant—meat-and-potatoes sensations that his family and friends love.

“Since purchasing our farm five years ago (in Cashmere, WA), it became even more apparent that we wanted to prepare simpler foods with incredible flavors.” So the steakhouse concept was born with a hot outdoor grill, a 50-year-old electric stove and farm fresh produce from the backyard. Four feisty chickens added organic eggs to the daily mix.

The couple was also aware that neighbors seeking out restaurants featuring steaks had to go downtown or make a long drive across town to find their beef.

The new menu is filled with Ludger’s favorites, including steaks in two sizes (New York, filet, tenderloin skewers, prime top sirloin and rib-eye) and pork, along with fish and seafood selections, sandwiches and lighter fare, plus a variety of side choices and terrific sauces.

All grilled entries come with a fresh garden salad, choice of potato, seasonal vegetables and warm bread—creating a great value, traditionally one of the benefits of a SZMANIA’S meal.

German classics that have becomes SZMANIA’S signature dishes--Jägerschnitzel and Bratwurst—as well as Ludger’s Caesar Salad and Curry Dusted Oysters, made the new menu.

“I’m really excited about this,” Ludger commented. “This is an enjoyable change for us and fills a hole in what’s offered in our area. The customers we’ve talked to are anxious to try the new menu (see menu at www.szmanias.com) and we’re anxious to have some fun with it.”

SZMANIA’S will have a different look as well, with color changes and some physical modifications on the interior, a new passageway to the outdoor patio, and changes to the bar. The neighborly service, the quality of the food, the friendly ambience, however, remain.

“Our roots run deep in Magnolia and it’s our sincere hope our current customers will enjoy the changes and new visitors will give us a try,” Julie said. “We’ll raise a glass to longevity—in restaurants, friendship and life, and look to the future.

“As Ludger likes to say, ‘great food satisfies the soul almost as much as a good laugh.’”
