By: rob laila How to Make Hardwood Floor Polish Type 1 This is the most basic of polish and probably the easiest to make at home. All you need is some warm water and white vinegar. Add and dilute half a cup of white vinegar into a gallon of warm water. Dip the sponge in the solution, squeeze until much of it back into the bucket. Apply the sponge on the floor while regularly rinsing it in another bucket of clean water. Repeat the process until desired result is achieved. This type of solution is best suited for hardwood floors that still have much of the shine left on them. Type 2 This is another easy-to-make hardwood floor polish with all the ingredients sitting right up there in your kitchen. Add 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of vegetable oil into a bowl and mix well. Make sure the measurements are exact if you don’t want to ruin your precious floors. Dip a cleaning rag into the solution and wipe it all over the floor. Rinse this cleaning rag into a clean bucket of water and repeat the process until the whole the solution has been applied on the entire floor area, including the wood grain. Whatever excess of it remains on the floor; clean it dry with fresh and dry cleaning rag. The solution should do well for a 10 foot room. Type 3 This one probably is a little more difficult to make as compared to some of the other homemade polishes but with better finishing. Some shopping may have to be done to get all the things in place. Put ¼ cup of grated beeswax into a bowl. Now put this bowl into a pan of boiling water until the beeswax has melted. Add ¼ cup of turpentine into the beeswax and stir continuously until it all starts to cool. You may even add some fruit extract to give it a pleasant smell. Before applying it on the floor, make sure the floor is clean with not even a speck of dust. Apply the polish using a sponge, wipe off extra polish and leave the floor to dry itself for 12-24 hours. Type 4 For laminated hardwood floors, an altogether different type of polish can be made at home, with not much expense, easy to find and effective ingredients. In a bowl or small bucket, combine two cups each of water and white vinegar, one cup of fresh lemon juice, and ¼ cup of unscented dishwashing soap (dye free) and mix well before use. Again, in the same way, take a sponge, dip it into the solution, and apply it on the floor. Keep rinsing the sponge after it runs dry and before you dip it again into the solution. Use a dry rag to clean off any excess of the polish that may have remained on the floor. Type 5 The type 5 polish is not a polish but an assortment of various other easily available products that be used to infuse a new life into the floors. Mineral oils like tung oil and linseed oil are considered great to clean the hardwood floors. Tea bags dipped in hot water and the water then applied to the floor is also a great way to bring the rugged brown look back on the floor. Baby shampoo and baby oil mixed with warm water will also do the trick and will leave with floors looking brand new. These homemade hardwood floor polishes will definitely make your floors look a whole lot younger and regular polishing will help them keep that way. Happy Polishing!
