Music Legend Dion DiMucci reveals how Jesus figures in everything: from music, to the Yankees to pasta and more

CINCINNATI, May 25, 2011 – Dion DiMucci’s road to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was paved with hits like “The Wanderer.” That song more than any other provides a glimpse inside the real life of a man who chronicles his journey back to his Catholic Faith in “Dion the Wanderer Talks Truth: Stories, Humor and Music,” available now from Servant Books.

DiMucci rose to fame as a prolific recording artist in the 1960s. “The Wanderer” entered the “Billboard” magazine charts in Dec. 1961 and climbed as high as No. 2 in the “Hot 100” in early 1962. On his way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – he was inducted in 1989 – DiMucci enjoyed multiplatinum records and the admiration of John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, among others.

He was still unhappy, though; his life began to tumble into a downward spiral that included drug and alcohol abuse. Something deeper was missing in his life – a relationship with God that would come to fruition on Dec. 14, 1979.

“I prayed, ‘God, it would be nice to be closer to you,’” DiMucci said. “Suddenly I was flooded with white light. It was everywhere; inside me, outside me – everywhere. Ahead of me I saw a man with his arms outstretched. ‘I love you,’ he said.”

That life-altering moment led to him embracing Christianity and, eventually, finding a home in the Catholic Church, which was part of his roots. However, growing up in the ‘60s on the rugged streets of the Bronx, he often dismissed it.

“Catholics took Jesus at his word, and they believed the Eucharist was his Blood, Body, Soul, and Divinity,” DiMucci said. “And they acted accordingly – with closed Communion, reverence for their tabernacle, an obligation to attend Mass, and many other doctrines and practices.”

In “Dion the Wanderer Talks Truth,” DiMucci covers many elements of his life – his love of the Catholic Church, his musical career, his friendship with John Lennon, and his thoughts on Lennon’s disdain for Christianity.
