Follow on Google News | T-Cell-15 | Autopilot Salt Cells | Zodiac Salt Cells | Replacement Salt Cells | Salt CellsSalt pool systems have become very popular over the last 15 years. There is still some mystery to them though. Many people don't feel comfortable with maintaining them. After this introduction to a salt system then you will be a pro!
1) Turn off your pool pump. 2) Remove the electrode wire(s) to the salt cell. This maybe a connection at the controller like on Hayward's Aqua Rite T-CELL-15 , the wires may remove be from terminals at the salt cell's body like on Autopilot salt cells, or you may have to remove the harness from the salt cell head like on Zodiac salt cells. 3) Loosen the unions on your cell until it is free from the pipes or spin the cell cap to remove the cell from it's chamber. Ecomatic salt cells are LEFT hand thread. Lefty tighty and righty loosy! 4) You need to have a bucket or plastic container for your water and acid solution. There needs to be a ratio of 3 gallons of water to 1 gallon of acid. This means you will need a 5 gallon bucket that is clean and does not have residual pool chemicals left inside of it. 5) Then place your salt cell into a bucket of water and muriatic acid mixture. 6) Wait until all the white calcium deposits have been eroded away by the mixture. This may take only a few minutes or up to 10 minutes. 7) Pour the bucket of water and acid solution into your pool but do let your salt cell fall or you'll have to go swimming after it. 8) With the salt cell in the bucket scoop some fresh pool water into the bucket with the salt cell. This will neutralize any solution left on the salt cell. 9) Reverse the process to reinstall your salt cell. Your salt cell is now clean and ready for action! As long as you take the proper steps for this process then your salt cell will last for years. Many people use too strong of an acid solution and burn the cell. This causes shortened cell life and premature replacement. Also another mistake is to leave the salt cell in the acid solution too long. This also will burn the salt cell's outer layer of the alloy plates causing damage. Do you know the best way to tell if your salt cell needs to be cleaned? Simply turn off the pump and remove the salt cell from the chamber or piping and look for white scale build up on the cell plates. If you can see through the all the cell plates then reinstall your salt cell. If you can not see through the cell plates then it is time for it to be cleaned. Generally, this is a monthly process but if you keep your PH at the correct level then the salt cell will go longer between cleanings. There are some that I know for a fact that have never been cleaned! Remember always follow your manufacture's specific instructions.
