Encasement on the ball at new Olympic handball arena

May 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Encasement is making a contribution to the British Olympic effort following the supply of brushed stainless steel column casings, which are being used in the new 7,000 capacity Olympic Handball Arena.

Located at Olympic park in Stratford, East London, the new building is designed by MAKE architects, which was founded by Ken Shuttleworth, who is probably best known for his work on the iconic ‘Gherkin’ building in London while working with Sir Norman Foster.

Clad in more than 3,000 sq m of recycled copper – to help develop a "rich natural colour as it ages" the venue features an eye-catching glazed concourse level, while incorporating a number of ‘sustainable’ initiatives, such as the roof-top rainwater harvesting system, which reduces water usage by 40%.

The 250 mm diameter column casings are used to conceal structural columns in the new arena and stand 2.4 metres high. Encasement’s Managing Director, Martin Taylor, said: "It’s great to be involved, albeit in a relatively small way, with this British Olympic project as the numerous new venues finally take shape in readiness for the big event in 2012."
