The collection deals with everything from driving through the North West Territories with Helena Katz as she ferries a herd of alpacas to their new home in her backyard to Trudy Kelly Forsythe at the Rolling Stones Big Bang Tour and Barbara Florio Graham in her encounter with actor Peter Falk (aka Columbo). The subtitle, "tales from a private list" refers to the fact that all these writers are members of a private e-mail list started by Barbara Florio-Graham and many are also members of the Professional Writers Association of Canada. The e-mail group was begun so that they could share experiences with each other. Their ages range from 43 to 78 and they represent a number of faiths including Judaism and Christianity as well as an eclectic mix of educational backgrounds. The three editors live in different cities and worked completely by e-mail. Irene Davis was the primary editor while Barbara Florio-Graham was the managing editor and Fred Desjardins the acquisitions editor. Brief biographies of each contributor is included in the volume and as the New York Journal of Books also states "most of the tales can be seen as “memoirs in miniature,” possessing an immediacy and a realism that is appealing in its authenticity."
