Ohio State Launches Leading-edge Conference on Hiphop Literacies

The Ohio State University announces it's first Hiphop Literacies conference featuring international champion of Hip-Hop, Toni Blackman and Daddy-O of Stetsasonic, among others.
 
April 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Columbus, OH. --  The first of it's kind at The Ohio State University comes an academic conference designed to explore Hip-Hop as a site of knowledge formation, identity construction and learning.

Hiphop Literacies: "We All In The Same Game" will promote interdisciplinary research and teaching while stimulating ongoing dialogue and outreach across the university and the local community.

Held at The Ohio State University on May 19th and 20th, 2011 the Hiphop Literacies conference features scheduled talks, panels, and workshops by renowned scholars and performers in addition to presentations by undergraduates, graduate students, and local community groups.

Organized by Dr. Elaine Richardson aka Dr. E, professor of literacy studies in The College of Education and Human Ecology and author of Hiphop Literacies, the conference will feature six top American scholars and musicians involved in the world of Hiphop.

Dr. Marc L. Hill, Associate Professor of Education, Teachers College Columbia University is one of the leading Hip-Hop generation intellectuals in the nation and will open the conference with a keynote address on Hiphop Pedagogy.

Dr. Gwendolyn Pough, Associate Professor of Writing and Women's Studies, Syracuse University will present a keynote lecture on Hiphop Feminism.

A Hip-Hop and technology workshop will be headed by legendary Hiphop band Stetsasonic founder and host of the leading online-syndicated show adding the Hiphop voice to the conversation on digital technology, "Get Yo Digital On,"  Daddy-O (Glenn Bolton).

Music Industry Educator Dwight Heckelman is the primary catalyst behind GROOVE U, the revolutionary 2 year music industry college located in the Short North. He will head a panel focused on the business behind beat making, sampling, and licensing.

Hiphop in the Classroom is an interactive workshop that will be led by emcee, performing artist, writer, and musician Speak Williams.

American rap lyricist, vocalist, actress and writer, Toni Blackman is the first Hiphop Cultural Envoy for the U.S. Department of State. She will close the conference with her groundbreaking "Rhyme Like A Girl" workshop where she taps into and strengthens the critical voices of women and girls through rhyme. Attendees are encouraged to sign up during registration. Space is limited to 25.

In addition to keynotes and workshops, each day conference sessions will also feature student and faculty presentations from across the university and the nation.

The conference finale will be topped by a concert you cannot afford to miss featuring Speak Williams, Toni Blackman and Columbus local performers.
