Armstrong to Participate in National Take Back Initiative

April 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Time to clean out cupboards and medicine cabinets of expired prescription drugs. From April 25-30, the Armstrong Atlantic State University Police Department will participate in the National Take Back Initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  

Savannah residents may drop off their unwanted prescription medication 24 hours a day from April 25-30 at a secured collection box located inside the Police Department on the Armstrong campus, 11935 Abercorn Street (corner of Arts and Library drives).

The initiative provides a safe way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs and addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to a 2009 survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

All drugs collected will be destroyed by the DEA. Drugs may be in or out of containers.  Needles will not be accepted. For additional information, call 912.344.3333.
