“What Happens If I Move During LASIK?”

Central Florida eye surgeon treats two individuals with cerebral palsy, says advanced technology can compensate even if you are unable to remain still during the procedure.

April 7, 2011 - PRLog -- ORLANDO, FLA. — Two individuals with cerebral palsy, a condition that sometimes leads to involuntary body movements, can now see better than they ever could with glasses or contacts thanks to recent advances in LASIK technology.

“3D LASIK is so sophisticated that even someone who is unable to remain still during the procedure can have astonishing results,” says Dr. Joel D. Hunter, founder of one of the most advanced LASIK facilities in the country at Orlando’s RDV Sportsplex.

Hunter Vision uses the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Eye-Q excimer laser with wavefront optimized technology. Its high-speed, eye-tracking technology follows the eye’s fastest movements, tracking the pupil's exact coordinates more than 400 times per second while ensuring an accurate placement of each laser pulse on the cornea.

“People often ask me, ‘What happens if I move during the LASIK procedure?’ It’s a common concern, but the difference between now and 10 years ago in what these lasers can do is staggering,” Dr. Hunter explains.

Like all technology, refractive surgery is evolving. It’s not uncommon for discount LASIK providers to provide ‘discounts’ in lieu of investing in this new technology, he adds.

When exploring LASIK options, many people mistakenly believe “a laser is a laser is a laser.” But not all LASIK is created equal, Dr. Hunter notes: “It’s true that all LASIK systems use a laser beam to reshape corneas and help correct vision problems. But there are many differences in equipment.”

The first, and perhaps most important, difference in lasers is the eye tracker. So even when your eye moves during surgery—and it will—the laser beam still makes precise contact with the cornea in exactly the right spot.

In fact, while you may never be aware of it, your eyes move about 100 times per second. For people with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, this is compounded due to involuntary body movements.

Dr. Hunter explains: “For these two individuals that we treated, contact lenses were impractical due to their physical limitations, and glasses were difficult for them to keep in place, clean and maintain. But now, thanks to 3D LASIK, a mom can play with her young daughter and not worry about her glasses getting knocked off, and a brilliant young man can work at his computer and not have to ask others to clean his glasses for him.”

Using this technology, vision can be corrected for just about anyone at any age “from 18 to 88,” Dr. Hunter concludes: “It’s safe, and it’s permanent. And it can literally change your life.”
