April 5, 2011 - PRLog -- Eco Hatchery, the developer of the Light Bulb Finder mobile app, soared to the finals of AT&T’s sixth annual “Open Call – Apps for All” competition and placed second in the “Social Good” category.

Of all entries, 21 apps in the “Social Good” category were invited to present to a panel of judges at the International CTIA WIRELESS® show in Orlando, Florida on March 23. Competing apps were judged based on Innovation & Originality, Marketability, Ease of Use, and User Interface Design.

“We’re very excited about the work we are doing in communities nationwide and what the app can help us achieve in terms of energy savings,” said Adam Borut, president of Eco Hatchery, a sustainability consulting and technology firm.

Launched in November 2010, the Light Bulb Finder app empowers users to switch to energy-efficient lighting at home where 18 percent of electricity consumption goes to lighting. The app is available as a free download on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android smartphones.

Light Bulb Finder enables users to find energy-saving light bulbs with the right light quality, style and performance. Based on a few simple inputs, the app instantly calculates energy savings, financial payback and environmental impact, so that users can make smart decisions about which incandescent bulbs to replace with energy-saving equivalents. Users can create shopping lists and buy bulbs through the app or at local stores.

“The app is very easy to use for DIY and assisted home lighting surveys. It also is finding a place in workshops and schools to help students and residents understand energy-efficient lighting as a first step toward sustainability,” Borut said.

To drive participation in regional energy efficiency programs, Eco Hatchery develops mobile marketing campaigns for municipalities, utilities and other organizations. Location-based banners are displayed directly on the app to increase awareness of local CFL rebates and other energy-saving incentive programs.

The app’s built-in tracking system enables Eco Hatchery to report users' aggregate energy savings and CO2 emissions reductions by zip code, auditor and device type.

“You can’t manage what you can’t measure. Our goal is to achieve real, quantifiable energy savings in the communities we serve,” Borut emphasized.
