Tameron Hyundai announces Hyundai ends buyer job-loss 'Assurance' plan Friday 3/31/11

March 31, 2011 - PRLog -- Hyundai says that, starting Friday, it will quit offering to take back your car if you lose your job. The program was begun January 2009, during the recession, as an attempt to calm buyers worried about ruining their credit if they got laid off and couldn't make payments.

"We took back about 350 cars over the life of the program, and it was beginning to taper off," says Hyundai spokesman Jim Trainor. "It had outlived its usefulness and wasn't drawing people to showrooms," he said.

He considers it good news, a mark of an improving economy and consumer confidence.

The Hyundai jobs program was launched with a hastily produced Super Bowl ad that replaced a planned ad for a Hyundai model. Legend has it that Hyundai took less than six weeks from coming up with the idea to nailing down the details to producing and airing the announcement in a $2.5 million ad slot in the Big Game. In the auto industry, that's near the speed of light.

Saturn, may it rest in peace, ran some ads mis-characterizing the Hyundai program as a ghoulish Hyundai coming to grab back your car the very day you lost your job. The Saturn ad, not long before parent General Motors killed the brand as part of GM's Chapter 11 reorganization, clearly did Saturn little good.
