| Adidas Overhauls its Environmental Policies; To Up 'Better Cotton' UseGerman-based sportswear maker Adidas said Tuesday it was overhauling its environmental policies and approach to environmental management by focusing on "significant" improvements across its value chain.
Adidas said that part of its new strategy would commit the company to using 100 percent Better Cotton by 2018 as it released its Environmental Strategy, a five-year plan to update its environmental management. "Implementing environmental performance across our value chain is an important step to deliver sustainable operations over the long term," said Adidas Group chief executive officer Herbert Hainer. The strategy will extend existing Adidas programmes to deliver process efficiencies across the sportswear group's value chain, including product design, sourcing, logistics and the company's IT systems. Adidas said the overhaul would enable it to deliver more sustainable products to consumers, as well as improving the company's environmental footprint. The company's commitment to using a higher percentage of Better Cotton focuses on reducing water consumption and pesticide use in cotton farming. Adidas co-founded the Better Cotton Initiative which aims to improve the environmental impact of the cotton production industry. It has committed to use 40 percent Better Cotton by 2015, and 100 percent by 2018, among other company-wide initiatives. Author: Mike King, analyst.
