If your pooch has a pain in his paw or your cat is on its ninth life.
If your goldfish is swimming anti clockwise or your parrot is giving you the silent treatment.
If your chameleon has turned blue or your Chihuahua has chewed your Jimmy Choos.
If the wheel is spinning but the hamster is hibernating.
If your rabbit is more flip than flop or your pug has a runny nose.
If your cat has a cough or your pet needs a passport....
Never fear – Dec the Vet is here!

The Village Veterinary Clinic, a new local vet service has opened for business in Douglas Village. Declan Quigley or “Dec the Vet”, as he is known, is a Veterinary graduate from UCD and fresh from treating animals and pets in the UK.  With 18 years veterinary experience, Declan, originally from Limerick and now living in Glanmire and his business partner (and wife) Elaine are poised to get to know both pets and their owners at their clinic in the village.

When asked what makes a good vet Declan told us: ‘A natural instinct and affinity for animals goes without saying – the equivalent of a good bedside manner is essential!’ he joked.   ‘After that, a good veterinarian is firstly sympathetic to the owner’s concerns, recognising that the pet is more than likely part of that family and a great companion.  Following that, a thorough history and examination takes place focusing on the ‘presenting problem’ to make a diagnosis and prepare a comprehensive treatment/action plan.  This generally involves more listening to the owner than talking’ he told us.

Having spent 4 years working in Emergency Veterinary medicine and surgery at The South London Emergency and Referral Clinic, an experience he says ‘was challenging and rewarding in equal measure’.  Declan brings with him all the necessary skills and experience involved in emergency veterinary medicine.  Suffice it to say that people can rest assured that Declan’s surgical skills have been well honed!

The Village Veterinary Clinic has been completely refurbished to offer a top of the range facility capable of providing advanced medical, diagnostic and surgical services appropriate to your pets needs. “My ultimate goal is to bring back the era of the local village vet who you come to know and trust and who knows the personality and medical history of your pet. It doesn’t stop there though; I also want people to know that we are a modern and accredited clinic with surgical and emergency capabilities” said Declan.

The philosophy behind the practice is centred on taking the time getting to know both client and pet, with an emphasis on continuity of care on offer which allows both owner and pet to build up a relationship and trust which is beneficial to all. ‘We are in this for the long haul and looking forward to getting to know our clients and neighbours in Douglas and the hinterland’ he said.

With its own dedicated parking area and at only a stone’s throw from Douglas Village just off the Douglas West Exit from the N25 Ring Road, it is an easily accessible location convenient and hassle free from all over the city and county.
