March 8, 2011 - PRLog -- The sale of US medical device firm CaridianBCT to Japanese corporation, Terumo will, at US$2.6 billion, constitute the biggest ever buyout by a medical equipment company from Japan. The deal is expecetd to go through by May of this year.

Japanese firms are utilising the strong value of the yen to make overseas purchases, giving them an easier route to expansion than at home where markets are already mature.

The purchase of CaridianBCT, currently owned by Swedish medical technology company Gambro, will catapult Terumo to top position in the global market for blood transfusion. Currently fifth, Terumo has been seeking means of boosting its position in blood transfusion.

CaridianBCT, which is based in Colorado, has 2,300 employees and specializes in equipment used in blood banks and other disposable medical devices. Sales for the year to Dec 2010 were $524 million, an increase of 7.2 percent on the previous year.

Encouraged by the continued strength of the yen, Japanese drug and medical equipment makers have been actively pursuing overseas companies.

Only a week earlier, pharmaceutical manufacturer Daiichi Sankyo announced plans to buy the US firm, Plexxikon. For the price of $805 million, Daiichi Sanko will increase its market share in the market for late-state melanoma treatments, while Fujifilm Holdings has struck a deal to purchase Merck's BioManufacturing Network.

With the yen holding its position in the world currency markets, these Japanese acquisition are unlikely to be the last.
