How cctv camera be improved?

March 8, 2011 - PRLog -- Saffron Walden’s CCTV camera is being reviewed to see how it can be improved.

The surveillance system, which is run by the town council, is made up of 17 cameras and last year cost £9,870 to operate.

Adrian Webb, acting town clerk, said a review was taking place to see how the CCTV camera could be improved and £5,000 had been allocated in the coming year’s budget to spend on an upgrade.

Essex police, when asked how many times CCTV camera in the town centre had been used in police cases or led to successful convictions, said they did not keep a record.

Insp Kevin Wakefield said: “CCTV is used to great effect in Saffron Walden.“

Every time there is an incident in the town centre officers will collect the CCTV and analyse it to see how it can help an investigation.

“But CCTV isn’t just used to review crimes or for the prevention and detection of crimes. If we get a call about a missing person or something like that we can use the system to help inquiries in that situation.

“We have an excellent working relationship with the town council as well, which helps things to run smoothly.”

Uttlesford district councillor Alastair Walters has been involved in the CCTV programme since it was installed 12 years ago and is aiding the town council review.

He said: “Quality of camera, quality of recording and illumination levels are the most important things for CCTV.

“The most important cameras are the ones in the town centre and at Swan Meadow.

“One of the problems is having low lighting levels as this doesn’t help images, so we are currently running a comparison and trying different types of cameras to see which upgrades are best for our town.

“We think the CCTV camera could definitely be improved so we’re reviewing it and coming to a conclusion and then we will look at funding options during this economic time.”

He also added it was hard to compare CCTV camera in Saffron Walden with big towns like Chelmsford as the latter was well lit, a lot busier and had the finance to have 24-hour surveillance.
