Social Awareness Improving Performance

When managers lose touch with staff, the gap between procedure and performance widens. These gaps can weaken and often sever vital links within a business structure.

Social awareness is the key to closing the gaps. Communication and self-expression are skills that may not come naturally to everyone, but if leaders learn to actively listen, they will get a sense and understanding of what employees are trying to say even if the words they use aren’t precise.

Improving social awareness requires managers to focus and listen without interrupting or interjecting. When managers are aware of the social and professional concerns of staff, it allows them to make adjustments that will improve the workplace and increase output and profit.

The bottom line is maintaining a communication link at all levels within a company. Suppose there is a procedure that some employees can’t understand or recognise its purpose. If they feel comfortable questioning the process, they will gain knowledge and confidence to do their job. This can have a powerful impact on performance

Managers and leaders must be purpose driven, but they also need to develop a social and personal awareness of the individuals on their team. Perception and reality blur when there is limited interaction and communication between departments or levels of staff.

To create a cohesive team, managers and leaders must constantly strive to maintain effective social awareness.
