" IT IS ALWAYS A BUYERS MARKET "

Buying an older used vehicle is a crap shoot. You are taking a chance on losing all that you paid less what a junk yard will pay you if you have a major failure. A good used beater can be the best thing that ever happened to your budget. If you get lucky you may get a few years of reliable service. Cost per mile looking back is easy to calculate. It already happened. Cost per mile looking ahead is just guesswork and luck. Everybody knows somebody who purchased a vehicle for a few hundred bucks, drove it for a few years, put a gazillion miles on it then sold it for nearly what they paid for it. It does really happen. Here is a list of the top five  "vehicle groups" that increase your odds of getting a good beater. IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER!

1) Rear wheel drive Ford and Chevy sedans, trucks and vans. All have well proven motors and transmissions. Typically very durable, easy to repair.

2) GM full sized sedans with the Buick 3800 motor. Models include Buick LeSabre, Park Ave., Pontiac Bonneville,Olds Regency & Deltas. Front wheel drive.

3) Ford Taurus, all years, Front wheel drive, The large corporate fleets and rental companies understood their durability and purchased millions.

4) Honda & Toyota. Models to look for include: Honda Accord and Civic, Toyota Camry and Corolla (Geo and Chevy Prism is the same car as the Corolla) These four cars are my personal favorites. They are just plain good basic vehicles that last for years and many miles, they take years of abuse and seem to always keep running.

5) Chevy Cavalier, Ford Escort @ Focus, all are hard on wheel bearings and brakes but great value and durability for what you can pick one up for. Never pretty, often rusty, but cheap to keep running.

Save your money for repairs and stay away from cosmetic improvements until you really trust your new purchase. If the tires have 50% tread remaining and are a little edgy, balance and rotate instead of replacing them right away. Save your funds for what really matters like brakes, heat, lights, motor and trans. As you get to know your beater better, feel free to splurge!
