Feb. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- If your hearing aid is not functioning correctly try the following. If there is no improvement, try to a drop in a clinic to have your hearing aid repaired never attempt to repair the hearing aid yourself.

There is no sound from your hearing aid
•   Check that the hearing aid is switched on and the volume control (if you have one) is set correctly.
•   Check that the battery is the correct size (the battery should fit snugly in the drawer) and that it is inserted correctly into the hearing aid (the drawer should shut easily without you having to force it.
•   Inspect all the openings on your earmould to make sure that they are not blocked with wax. Wax should be removed with the wire loop provided at your hearing aid fitting (please contact the department if you do not have a wire loop).
•   It may also be necessary to replace the wax filter if you have been provided with filters
•   If you have a Body Worn or a Cros aid, check that the cord is correctly inserted and check that the cord is not split – as the cords age they go a greenish colour and become less pliable. When this happens you need to replace the cord.
•   Check the tube to see if it is blocked with condensation (this can occur in very warm weather if you perspire or in the winter when you come indoors from the cold). Remove the earmould from the hearing aid and blow through the earmould tubing to clear any moisture.
•   Check to see if the tube has buckled or twisted (this can happen if the aid has been reattached at the wrong angle after washing). It may be possible to straighten the tube but it is likely that you will need to get the earmould retubed.
•   Clean the battery contacts with a dry cotton bud as poor battery contact can affect the hearing aid performance.
•   Replace the battery with a new one

My hearing aid is whistling (feedback)
Feedback occurs when amplified sound from your hearing aid leaks out of your ear and back to your hearing aid microphone (it is the same effect as when someone with a microphone stands too close to a loud speaker and causes a howling sound from the loudspeaker).
•   Ensure that your earmould is correctly inserted. If you have problems inserting your earmould you may need to contact us so that we can arrange for you to have help practising insertion.
•   Check your earmould to ensure it is not blocked with wax.
•   If there is a great deal of wax on the earmould this could be an indication that your ears need dewaxing. If you suspect this could be the case you should contact your doctor’s surgery to have your ears checked for wax and syringed if appropriate. This is a very common cause of whistling in hearing aids.
•   Feedback will also occur if the earmould no longer fits properly. Over time, the size and shape of the ear changes and the earmould might then become loose. If you think this is the case you will need to attend the drop in clinic for a new earmould impression.

My Hearing Aid is not loud enough or the sound is distorted
•   Inspect all the openings on your earmould to make sure that they are not blocked with earwax. If there is wax remove it with the wire loop provided at your hearing aid fitting. If your hearing aid has a filter that you can change then replace the filter.
•   If the deterioration has happened suddenly then it may be due to a build up of wax in your ear. If you suspect this could be the case you should contact your doctor’s surgery to have your ears checked for wax and syringed if appropriate.
•   If you have been provided with a volume control try increasing the volume slightly to see if there is any improvement. Hearing will deteriorate gradually over time so you may simply need to gradually increase the volume on your hearing aid to account for this.
•   If you have not had your hearing tested for a few years and the hearing aids have gradually become too quiet it is likely that you will need to be referred to us by your doctor for a reassessment appointment. This will enable us to test your hearing and either fine tune your current hearing aids or make preparations to upgrade your hearing aid provision.
•   Replace battery
.
My batteries are not lasting very long
•   Check that you are switching the hearing aid off correctly when you remove it from your ear.
•   Clean the battery contacts with a dry cotton bud as poor battery contact can affect the hearing aid performance.
•   Store your batteries in a cool, dry place.

My Hearing Aid is making a strange noise
•   Replace the battery you may be hearing the battery low warning signal
•   Check that your hearing aid is not switched to T or loop. If the aid is on T or loop when there is no loop system the hearing aid will pick up electromagnetic interference causing a humming noise.

I got my hearing aid wet
Hearing aids should not come into contact with water. The moisture can damage the components of the aid or a battery will corrode if it gets wet. However, if your aid does get wet there are a couple of things that you can try:
•   Dry your aid thoroughly with a tissue, remove the battery and discard it. Place your aid (with the battery drawer open) in the airing cupboard overnight to allow it to dry out completely.
•   If we have given you a mini dry aid (pot) put your hearing aid in here, again remembering to use a new battery after the aid has dried out.
•   If these options do not work you will need to attend the drop in clinic
