Web Apps vs Apps - Which Is Better?

At first glance it can be confusing to understand the difference between a Web App and an App. Why the 2 different types and what difference does it really make?

Feb. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- At first glance it can be confusing to understand the difference between a Web App and an App. The easiest place to start is that an App is actually short for an ‘Application’ or Software Program. A Web App is a ‘Web Based Application’, a website, or in simpler terms a program that runs online in your Internet Browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome etc). A regular App does not run inside a browser and instead runs independently on your mobile smartphone.

Still confused? Lets take an example of a Web App and an App to illustrate the difference. Outlook is an App. You have probably come across Microsoft Outlook at some point to read and send your emails. This is an "App" because it is installed on your mobile. Hotmail, the world's most famous email facility, is a "Web App" as you don't have to install anything, you just access it through an Internet Browser.

Web Apps vs Apps

The debate has already begun which is better an App or Web App? Many companies have their own views and are already backing either team App or team Web App, but which is technically better? Here are the facts:

Because a Web App is essentially a clever website you never need to update it, it updates all by itself whenever you visit it. Having a Web App means when a customer tries to access your website via their smartphone it will automatically direct them to the Web App. An App on the other hand needs to be updated on your mobile before you can see the new updates and it does not affect the online mobile site, this would need to be developed separately.

You can access a Web App from any device with an internet connection, you don't need to keep installing it, just visit the Web App address like any other webpage. This also means it takes up virtually no space in your phone’s memory.

Web App's cater for more devices (and people!) as you only need one Web App whereas a regular App needs to be created for each individual device. A different version of the App would need to be developed specifically for a Windows, Apple, or Nokia smartphone and so hiking up the development price.

You can browse and install Apps directly through an App Market on your phone. This is free advertising as people will search by keyword in the market and your App will show up ready to be installed. A Web App cannot feature in this market place and relies on your own promotional and advertising work to get people to it and use it.

An App can utilise every feature of a device, for example the GPS co-ordinates, the camera, phone, SMS etc and so it can be a lot more fancy and impress users more. Games can run more smoothly and involve a more rich experience as they are not confined to browser constraints.

The verdict. It all depends on what the application is designed for as to which is better. If the functionality needs to access features on the mobile such as 3D graphics, GPS, the video camera and such then an App wins. If what is needed is an always up-to-date resource such as a shopping catalogue, a Customer Relationship Management tool, or a news room etc then the winning title goes to the Web App.

Robert Bajic, director of Adshires, states “the majority of businesses at the moment are in need of a shopping Web App to help increase sales in 2011. Ecommerce businesses need to keep up with what their customers want which is to be able to shop, browse, and check prices on their mobile phones. This means retailers need a Web App. Businesses that keep abreast of what’s happening in the market place increase sales. Businesses that say “I’ll wait and see” or “my business is different” will I’m afraid fall by the wayside as so many brick and mortar businesses did in the 90’s when they didn’t go online.
A mobile shopping facility always needs to be up-to-date, so as far as m-commerce goes a Web App is a must, features such as quick search, category based browsing, product information including pictures, price sensitive options, shopping basket, shipping costs, and easy mobile payments should be a given".

Adshires, a local Manchester based family-run company, develop both Apps and Web Apps for all sized businesses. For more information, visit http://www.adshires.co.uk/mobile-commerce.html, or call 0845 458 9680.
