Mobile data calls soar with a third of phone calls made over Wi-Fi or 3G

Feb. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- London, UK., 3rd February – In an age of mobile, many consumers are ditching their landlines, instead using their mobiles for all calls, utilizing monthly plans to ensure they are available where ever, whenever. However, while in the past this led to increased bills, savvy consumers are now saving money, using applications like Vopium, a leading provider in VoIP communications, to make calls.  Over the last year, calls using the application using either Wi-Fi or the 3G network, have risen from 19 percent to over 35.

A Danish based company, Vopium is currently experiencing significant growth in foreign markets. Since November 2009, UK market share has grown from 21 to 28 percent, with Australian share of traffic growing an incredible 13 percent (rising to 18) in the same period. Over the same amount of time, overall growth has been much greater, much of which the company attributes to consumers changing consumption patterns.

“As the smartphone market continues to grow, the usage of Wi-Fi for calls will continue to rise dramatically. All smartphones today have built-in Wi-Fi support and, at the same time, the number of Wi-Fi networks is growing, with hotspots available in an ever increasing number of public places,” explains telecoms analyst, Torben Rune, Netplan. “We are experiencing a shift in mobile communication. The price difference between international mobile roaming traffic and using a local Wi-Fi connection is so significant that many companies are choosing Wi-Fi. As such, we expect a significant rise in mobile VoIP.”

As Vopium offers low rates for international calls directly from your mobile phone, the company is finding that whilst many users begin with this, they go on to discover its other services such as low rates on text messages and calls to mobile and landline phones outside of Wi-Fi zones. This has led to an increase of 15 percent in monthly users over a six month period.

As more consumers invest in smartphones to give them everything in one package, they are benefiting from built-in Wi-Fi, which makes it is easy and inexpensive for them to stay in touch with friends and family abroad, driving increased demand for both Wi-Fi and mobile VoIP.”
