Sacramento-area stocks posted big gains in a down year

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Jan. 1, 2010 – Keith Springer discusses the effects of the end of the year Wall Street surge and how this effects local stocks.

According to the Sacramento Bee, “As Wall Street surged in 2010, local stocks went along for the ride. Despite continued weakness in the local economy, shares of publicly traded companies in the Sacramento area posted surprising gains for the year. An index of 12 local stocks compiled by The Bee increased by 16.4 percent, led by high-tech stocks and high-growth companies such as Waste Connections Inc.”

“The increase comes as the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped by about 11 percent for the year, closing at 11,577.51 on Friday,” the Bee continues. “The Dow ended the year at its highest level since August 2008, before the depths of the financial crisis. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose by about 13 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite was up 17 percent.”

"When you have a rising market, local stocks go up as well because it's all tied up with the general optimism of investors," said Keith Springer, president of Sacramento-based Springer Financial Advisors.
