In 2008, the internet security firm which he helped develop was bought out and DeBernardi was ultimately laid off from his status of VP sales development. Taking another placement with another organization he was again laid off. It was at this point that DeBernardi understood he would instead use his great skills and become a franchisee with WSI than spend the rest of his years before retirement being endlessly laid off.



“I wanted to be in charge of my own destiny and not be at the whim of a corporate lay off again and continually starting over trying to prove myself to new organizations,” said DeBernardi. “Franchising made sense to me for all the obvious reasons when compared to trying to start a business from scratch on your own with no corporate - style resources. I believed the odds of success were greater with a proven business model that franchise has to offer.”



After discovering WSI through a Google search for internet franchise businesses, DeBernardi did a lot of due diligence on the franchise, and respected the fact that WSI did the same with him.



“I respected the step by step vetting process I was put through. They don’t hand out franchise licenses to just anybody that is interested. WSI as a franchisor stands up to its unique story in the white collar home business franchise space,” said DeBernardi.

“My goals are to be at the $200 /year income level in 4 or 5 years. I am bringing in 1 new client a month which needs to be increased to 3 or 4 by mid 2011,” Said DeBernardi, “I am chasing a dream to have my own successful business that I can be active with, well into my retirement years if I choose to.”



At 58 years old, DeBernardi believes he has something to prove to himself, “This is my last great business challenge. I definitely want to be successful at this and proud of myself related to the risk I am taking,” explained DeBernardi.



Vice President of Marketing for WSI Elizabeth Monaghan, spoke about DeBernardi, “He is a prime model of a productive entrepreneur who wants to step out and show to the world he has a lot more to offer than what the restrictions of typical business would allow him. I think he will be a great success.”



DeBernardi hopes to have staff by 2012 and then work to a status that will let him to be active in the enterprise well into his retirement years without having to work full time.



Said DeBernardi, “A big part of the appeal of WSI, is that I can eventually support a more free sense of lifestyle that lets me take time off when ever I want or need to, like taking the afternoon off on a whim or to head up to the lake for a 3-day weekend etc. whenever I want to.”
