Jan. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- On the "Bouncing Back Now" Show on the Real Coaching Radio TV Network, Donna Marie Thompson's special guest Ms. Amy Carroll -- famed author of “Undoing the Ego Tango” -- advised viewers to take note of their default reaction to the comments of others.

Carroll posed the questions: "Have you ever had someone say something to you that just set you off? And you became upset – almost instantly? I’m guessing that you have. So just how is it that you lose control so easily and react in a way that is not a conscious choice? It is your default response at work."

Carroll’s model assigns default responses into one of three categories: Predator, Prey, or Partner. "We can shift into one of these three roles without knowing it; without even thinking," explained Carroll. "You don’t even know that you are doing it most of the time. And you can assume a different role with different people – and under different circumstances," Carroll continued.

Be Aware

"Many people are totally unaware of their own default response. Because it happens automatically you don’t even know that it is happening — even as it is actually happening," explained Carroll. "No wonder there are so many relationship communication challenges. No wonder there are so many relationship problems. But by being aware, you can improve your relationship compatibility and develop a healthy relationship," guided Carroll.

Carroll advised viewers to consciously approach each conversation as a Partner – with a Partner mindset. "Take the high ground – and keep the high ground, no matter what. It is the winning way," she commented.

The Model

According to Carroll, "The Prey is generally dissatisfied with the status quo and is often highly motivated to change. The Prey is tired of getting pushed around in life. Prey should take up more space and speak in a bigger voice. It can be a self-esteem issue; it can be due to a peacemaker mentality so as not to rock the boat and have everyone like you."

Carroll went on to say that, "The Predator is often quite happy – after all, they generally get their way – even if by bullying. But this comes at a cost; resentment is building. Predators can increase awareness to maintain their composure; getting angry and bossy means you’ve lost it."

Carroll cautioned that "At first, adopting the Partner role can be uncomfortable for both Prey and Predator - because it works against their default response. Practice being a Partner to keep conversations on an even keel. Partners apply the techniques of non-violent communication – they keep the peace without giving up the store."
