Depending on the age and grade in school goal setting for students is very much like goal setting for adults. A chart can be made to set out what the goal is, when it should be accomplished and what will be done daily to accomplish that goal Elementary school students would have less trouble following their chart than high school or college level students because they would have more parental and other adult influence to help them.

High school and college level students have only themselves to look to for encouragement and diligent follow through. These two levels of students have so many activities and other distractions that they soon lose track of their goals or give up thinking that it won't work anyway. They have not yet practiced their diligent and determined status in life.

Goal setting for students in the high school and college environments should be encouraged by parents and other adults that the student has respect for. Such a person can be encouraging and influential in the success of a planned goal. When the student's interest in the goal is waning this person can be a reminder of what the goal meant to the student at the time it was planned. It is not that the high school or college level student is lazy or disinterested once the goal is set, it is most likely because the student is caught up in either their school work, sports activities or other after school activities including their time with friends. Goal setting for students can vary widely, for instance, a realistic goal for the college student is career goal setting. Besides setting out how long it will take to accomplish the goal, the student should also mention, on the chart, what education is needed to accomplish this goal and what the student will do to get this education. It may mean getting a job to continue with an education or, extra courses and if so, what will be done to juggle the work schedule with the school schedule to realistically accomplish this career goal.
