Draws Thousands to Downtown Atlanta’s Woodruff Park

ATLANTA, GA (November 2010). Luminocity Atlanta’s world premiere light-based mobile performance took place on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at the historic Downtown Atlanta Woodruff Park with Hinterland, a new creation by gloATL starring Big Boi. This 9-scene progressive, migrating work combined light, technology, dance, music, aerial, and theatrical design to create an explosion of breathtaking visuals and dynamic movement.

While no official headcount is available many authorities estimated there were 15,000 to 20,000 spectators at the free to the public event. Thousands filled the park, the perimeter and the streets to catch glimpses of the many vignettes that were spread throughout the park.  All performances featured casts of unique, illuminated characters and music, incorporating a myriad of sounds and cultural rhythms, completed by the performance of world-renowned artist Antwan “Big Boi” Patton as the “Ringmeister”.  Big Boi performed several works, including music from his critically acclaimed new album “Sir Luscious Leftfoot and the Son of Chico Dusty.”  After the performance installation in the park, a parade-like procession along Peachtree Street embarked with an estimated 2,000 spectators joining in on the celebratory atmosphere.  A finale on Baker Street near The World of Coca-Cola featured another performance by Antwon “Big Boi” Patton, lighted BMX bike stunts and a myriad of theatrical dance and acrobatics.

You could hear many gasps of excitement throughout the crowd as each new performance began, even though some, due to the large crowds, had limited views while in the park.

Kelly Nelson, Creator and founder of Luminocity Atlanta and the event’s producer explains, “While we always knew the city wanted and needed an event of this kind, we now have proven this concept and have certainly confirmed the enthusiasm of Atlantans and guests for the Luminocity program.  With what we’ve learned from this year, coupled with proper funding/sponsorship, we will now move to a format that ensures every spectator will hear and see everything clearly no matter the size of audience…even if we attract 100,000 people or more at the next event!”

Bill Kaelin, Executive Director of gloATL states, “The goal of Hinterland was to bring people from all walks of life together through art– and we have done just that. You looked into the crowd that night and you didn’t see specific ages, ethnicities, or economic groups – you saw a group of people experiencing something totally different, something beautiful, and potentially life changing, together. Seeing the audience members interact with each other and with the performers was incredible, and all of this happening in an area of Atlanta that has never had this kind of event before. Hinterland brought Woodruff Park and Downtown Atlanta to life.”

Stacy Burnsed, Director of Marketing and PR for Luminocity, further explains the successes of the program, “Luminocity’s mission was not only to bring a cool, cross cultural event to Atlanta, but also to positively affect the city in many ways. We achieved those goals already in our first year. We utilized First Step, a homeless to job readiness staffing company, we created jobs, we increased tourism activity in the area, and we utilized green practices - not to mention we brought throngs of people together, from many walks of life, in celebration to an area of downtown that would have otherwise been largely empty at this time of night. This response in our first year is a strong testament to what can be achieved though these types of programs. We are proud of this accomplishment and look forward to what can be done with more funding for future events in 2011.

The performance also included fully battery powered floats and service vehicles.  Luminocity Atlanta is in development stages for an event in 2011.
