FAQ: Why Golf Course Have 18 Holes

Why not is the other numbers? If you have same confusion, let me explain to you:


Just like many advancements throughout golf history, the standardization of 18 holes did not happen as the result of the momentous decision arranged by many.


And once again, similar to much advancement inside golf, the standardization of 18 holes can be awarded to St. Andrews.


Prior to the mid-1760s - and till the early 1900s - it was common to discover golf courses which were comprised of 12 holes, or 19, or 23, or even 15, or any other number.


Then, all-around 1764, St. Andrews transformed from 22 holes to 18 holes. The reason? Well, everyone knows 18 holes are generally less difficult to take care of than 22!

18 holes did not become the normal until the early 1900s, however coming from 1764 onward; much more courses copied the St. Andrews model. Then, inside 1858, the Noble & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews issued brand new guidelines.

"In 1858, the R&A issued fresh regulations for its users; Rule 1 stated 'one circular of the Back links as well as 18 holes is reckoned a match except if otherwise stipulated'. We can simply assume that will, since many clubs appeared to the R&A for advice, this was little by little adopted throughout Britain. By the 1870s, therefore, more courses got 18 holes and the circular of golf was being acknowledged while consisting of 18 holes."
