Unplanned Shopping Sprees Cost Shoppers £2,256 per Year!

Women were more likely to be tempted into impulse buys with 74% admitting they don’t always plan ahead, compared to 68% of men who could be enticed by offers and potential Christmas money bargains.

Nov. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- Recent figures highlighted that a staggering 71% of adults fail to regularly plan ahead on their spending, even with the current economic circumstances and bad credit problems which have hit many UK Families.

Petrol tops the list of items regrettably purchased at the last minute, causing people to overpay for it as a result.

“By not planning a weekly shop, consumers are finding themselves lured into spending money on items they don’t necessarily want or need”, confirmed Andrew James,
spokesperson for Bad Credit Loans 4 You a specialist at sourcing bad credit loans and bad credit Christmas money http://www.bad-credit-loans-4-you.co.uk/bad-credit-christmas-money.html

“With the economy in its current state, those families who aren’t careful with their cash will struggle saving money at Christmas and could require extra Christmas money to pay for their Christmas dinner or presents”.

A survey by First Direct bank showed that cash-rich, time-poor consumers are throwing away £2,256 on average each year by failing to plan ahead on their purchases.

The tendency towards last minute spending on everyday items can add up to an overwhelming £43 per week which is a huge amount of Christmas money.

The study revealed that those aged over 45 were the worst offenders when it came to leaving their purchases to the last minute, with 76% doing so.

Women were more likely to be tempted into impulse buys with 74% admitting they don’t always plan ahead, compared to 68% of men who could be enticed by offers and potential Christmas money bargains.

Over a third of those asked said they bought petrol, only to be annoyed at finding a cheaper offer elsewhere afterwards.

With the price of unleaded petrol varying dramatically between 113.9p and 131.9p, those who do not plan where they are going to fill up could pay an extra £173 per year. Use petrolprices.com to source your local cheapest petrol, simply register with your postcode and they will tell you your cheapest garage and keep you regularly updated on the cheapest garage.

The Top 10 list of most regretted last-minute purchases according to First Direct are:
1. Petrol (34%)
2. Electrical goods (32%)
3. Groceries (31%)
4. Clothes (24%)
5. Insurance (17%)
6. Air / rail tickets (11%)
7. Theatre / cinema tickets (9%)
8. Repair services e.g. mechanic / plumber (8%)
9. Jewellery (6%)
10. Savings account (5%)

Nearly four out of every ten families do not plan their meals in advance, prompting expensive last minute stops at convenience stores to buy ingredients.

31% believed they had spent too much for groceries as a result, with an average potential overspend of £446 per year, an alarming figure for people with currently low levels of Christmas money.

Rail and Air fares come top of the list of money wasted by not shopping around according to the research by First Direct.

Bad Credit consumers waste £988 every year on travel when they could have obtained cheaper tickets elsewhere by booking in advance via companies such as Trainline (trainline.co.uk).

First Direct released the following information regarding the average amount wasted per year by people not shopping around:

Air/rail tickets:              £988.45
Groceries:                 £445.81
Theatre/Cinema tickets:   £335.92
Insurance:                 £280.00
Petrol:                    £172.57
Electrical Goods:              £  33.53

Total:                       £2256.28

28% of women said that they did not plan in advance what they were going to wear on a big night out, but instead bought an outfit on the day.

Just over two in ten people leave their Christmas shopping until the last few weeks.

This was true of three times as many men (31%) than women (13%), stating they didn’t start spending their Christmas money until a fortnight before Christmas Day.

But more than half of women surveyed spread the cost of Christmas by spending their Christmas money on shopping at least a month before 25th December, compared to just over a third of men.

“Some men live up to their billing of not being very good at planning ahead and leave their Christmas gift shopping until Christmas Eve”, confirmed Mr James of Bad Credit Loans 4 You.

2% admitted to leaving it until the very last minute, which would be almost impossible for those who require Xmas loans to help pay for the ultimate Christmas present.

Richard Brown, senior savings product manager at First Direct, says: “By failing to plan ahead Britons are needlessly throwing away their hard earned cash that could otherwise be used to add to their savings pot.”

“With rising inflation and VAT set to rise in January, it is more important than ever that people take advantage of potential savings. Taking a few simple measures could save both time and money.”
