Nov. 25, 2010 - PRLog -- The story follows the advenures of Shaun, a recluse living on a Tropical North Queensland island with his pet goat called McLeod. The story delves into the estranged relattionship between father and daughter and the reason why Shaun became a recluse.

When Shaun received a letter from his daughter petula begging for help to escape her abusive partner, Shaun embarks on a roadrip to Brisbane. Along the way he gets involved in silly situations like giving a lift to a couple expecting a baby and having to deliver the child, and later helping a Japanese couple with their broken-down car. Finally at his daughter’s house he is confronted with the dramatic situation of getting Petula and her child away from a violent unpredictable man.

This is a great Aussie yarn.

Mark Burton was born at a very early age in Melbourne. He left Melbourne two days before the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983 for a round Australia trip – and got as far as Cairns, where he now lives with his wife and son. He has had a bash at a wide variety of jobs over the years, but now works primarily as a musician and artist. Mulligan’s Island is his first book … but he has a couple more imposing themselves on his consciousness.

Some testimonials include:

"It was interesting to see how Shaun developed gradually through the story, and I particularly liked his comment towards the end about it being more difficult to stay "amongst it all" and still get what you want from life. I felt like highlighting it, and sending it off to some people I know.....but I digress. I think your promise about the sex and swearing was just an old advertising ploy to lure in a reader; but, as you said, it was all very tastefully done (of course), and intrinsic to the plot. I suspect that my chance to star in your next work, thinly disguised (in more ways than one) as a lap-dancer, may not be quite as spectacular as you had led me to believe-just as long as it's not really depicting my life; you want to write something interesting, after all!" -  love,L

"Loved the book Mark, a great piece of Australian Literature, very funny and engaging. Thanks for the opportunity to read it," - Deb

"Mark, I truly enjoyed the read, well done! I laughed, I cried, I think even teenagers would enjoy it. So what’s next, will we see Mark the actor? You’ve covered all other forms of the arts! Seriously, the book is good enough to publish, the characters are strong and the moral is a good one, we all need love no matter how estranged our relationships can become in this modern world.  Well done and thanks for letting me read," Loreta.

"Having read Mark Burton’s book 'Mulligan’s Island' I’d like to say ‘boy’ what a good read. I love the ‘goat’ and the many characters Mark has created. The journey of Shaun from a reclusive lifestyle, back into the real world is a good yarn, and full of very funny events along the way, flavoured with excellent Queensland slang!  This book would make a great Aussie movie, and I could see say, Brian Brown playing Shaun! Pass on my congratulations to Mark, he has a great talent!" - Peter Murphy
