Weehawken Water Tower Restored by SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City

Ready for 150 Year Celebration of Weehawken with Jet Sponge Blasting Technique

Nov. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Hoboken, NJ - As part of the 150 year Anniversary of the Celebration of Weehawken, SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City was commissioned to clean and restore the first two interior levels of the Historical Weehawken Water Tower.  Using a powerful micro abrasion technology, known as Sponge Jet Blasting, SERVPRO was able to precisely clean and remove surface contaminants from sensitive substrates and protect the surrounding environment of the building.

“We carefully selected our cleaning process due to the age and sensitivity of the brick inside the tower and the technique needed to be gentle, but strong enough to remove and strip the years of build up from surface contaminates,” said Lance Harvey, owner of SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City.  “However, we were careful not to over strip the brick and maintained the Water Tower’s historical appearance.”

“With a grant from the Hudson County Open Space Historic Preservation Trust Fund, I recommended the Sponge Blasting be retained,” said Alane Finnerty, Chairperson of the Water Tower Committee responsible for hiring SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City for the restoration.  “The sponge blasting process was not only gentle enough for use on bricks, it was environmentally friendly - the process has no chemical run – off and the particles are able to be vacuumed, cleaned and reused several times.”

Sponge Jet Blasting is a technique where tiny sponge particles are placed in a jet gun allowing the blaster to control the cleaning performance at the surface and blast.  Whereas traditional abrasion techniques can cut into surfaces, sponge jet blasting flattens on impact, exposing the banded abrasives and dislodging the contaminants safely.  This technique can be used to gently clean various substances, including paint, grime and other coverings, with the most common substance removed being mold.

According to Alane Finnerty, “SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City not only did the job of Restoration to our specifications, but they also did it on time and within our budget.  Additionally, Lance Harvey (owner of SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City) was extremely careful to explain the technique and I was impressed by how The SERVPRO Team communicated with me throughout the process of restoring the interior of the Tower.”

“It was a pleasure to work with Ms. Finnerty and the people of Weehawken,” responded Lance Harvey, owner of SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City.  “Her enthusiasm for this project made it even more exciting to be a part of the 150-year celebration of Weehawken and we look forward to more partnerships within the community.”
