Nov. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- Are you in desperate need of new Adidas running shoes? If so, are you also uncertain about how to find a pair that will work for you?

When choosing your shoes, be sure to buy the pair that fits your feet the best. In fact, podiatrists say the fit of your shoes is critical to your comfort, safety, enjoyment and health.

With that in mind, here are some tips to help you select the right pair.

1. Visit an athletic shoes specialty store. Many people buy discount athletic shoes online or at a discount store. That's a great way to get the best value for your money! However, before you begin shopping, you will want to visit an athletic shoes specialty store to have them measure and fit your foot. The staff at these stores are often trained in sports medicine, and can evaluate your feet to determine what type of shoe is best for you. If you have been injured in the past, this will be particularly important for you.

2. Keep an open mind. When you start shopping for shoes, keep an open mind. Try on different brands and styles to find the one that fits the best. There will probably be a range of different shoes in the category you need, such as pronation control. Try on different pairs to help you find the pair with the best fit and function.

3. Fit your shoes at the end of the day or after exercise. The best time to have your shoes fitted is at the end of the day, or after a long run or other athletic activity. After rigorous activity, your feet tend to swell, and you want your shoe to fit well at this time to ensure comfort. If you use either custom-made orthotic insoles or if you typically wear store-bought insoles, bring these with you to your fitting. Insoles can cause the foot to sit higher in the shoe, resulting in a tighter fit.

4. Ensure a comfortable fit. The fit of shoes should be somewhat like a comfortable glove. They should be snug, but not tight, and there should be space (at least one finger's width) between the tip of your big toes to the end of the shoes. Also, make sure the shoe is not too loose as it could cause the shoe to fall off.

5. Position your foot in the shoe. When you first lace up a pair of shoes, tap your heel on the ground. This will position your foot as far back in the shoe and gives the best fit. Keep in mind that before each run, you should again tap your heel on the ground to get the same fit you had when you tried the shoe on.

6. Quality counts. Price is an important consideration, but don't buy a shoe based on price alone. If you buy a cheap shoe that doesn't fit and makes your feet hurt, it won't be much of a bargain sitting in the back of your closet. Investing a little more in a good quality, comfortable shoe will pay off in the long run.

7. Break your shoe in. While modern shoes are designed to fit well as soon as you buy them, you will still want to spend some time breaking the shoes in. Once you have purchased the shoes, walk around in them for a day or so. This allows the material in the shoe to conform to your foot and to flex. Breaking a shoe in can help you avoid painful blisters after your next workout!

Careful selection of shoes can prevent injuries and help motivate you to exercise. The right shoes will enhance your performance and your enjoyment of running. Take the time to find the best shoe for you, and your feet will thank you!
