The Foothills Welcomes New State-Of-The Art High School to Neighborhood$104 million school designed to accommodate 1,500 students in North Carlsbad
The new Carlsbad district high school, as yet unnamed, is looking to qualify under the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), whose mission is to create environments that are not only energy and resource efficient, but also healthy, comfortable, well lit, and containing the amenities for a quality education. Construction of the school, which will welcome its first class in Fall 2013, will focus on using low-emitting building and surfacing materials, thus improving indoor air quality for students and staff. The new school is a welcome amenity for a family minded community such as The Foothills, which is comprised of Alcéa by D.R. Horton, Blossom Grove by William Lyon Homes and Rockrose by Brookfield Homes. All three neighborhoods at The Foothills are now welcoming their first new residents. The $104 million, 139,000-square- According to architectural firm Roesling Nakamura Terada, “The campus concept design emphasizes the idea of a dynamic balance of manmade environment with nature. The architectural and site design will foster an intellectual understanding and experience of natural systems.” Among the school’s features will be 57 teaching stations to service 1,500 students, a stadium that seats 3,000, world-class math and science facilities, and a structure devoted to fine arts. Included within the fine arts department will be areas for sculpture, painting, dance, choir, band and digital arts. In addition to its stadium, the new school will have synthetic turf and track, baseball and softball fields, four basketball courts and six tennis courts, and a gymnasium. Other buildings include a cafeteria, a library, classrooms and administration. There will also be a 1,500-foot extension to Cannon Road and a 745-space parking lot. Construction, design and program team members include Barnhart Balfour Beatty, Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects, and Gafcon. Not only has the project been designed by the most environmentally aware architects, but it also boosts the local economy by bringing jobs to the community. Carlsbad’s newest master-planned community of new homes, The Foothills offers residents an exclusive Swim Club that includes a solar-heated resort-style swimming pool, spa and children’s pool.
