Follow on Google News | Once Again the Ski Season Is Upon Us! Where Will You Be Jetting Off To?With the Ski season just around the corner, now is a great time to start planning a trip to snowier climates.
If you fancy combining an exhilarating activity holiday with the chance to explore an entirely different culture, why not try up and coming resorts in a destination like Croatia or Bulgaria? Dust off your skis, shake off your salopettes and browse the list below for picture perfect resorts all within a few hours flying time... Chamonix-Mont- Host of the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and often looked upon as one of the finest ski resorts in the world. Boasting the highest peak in the Alps, it is also France’s oldest ski resort. TIP: If you’re a confident skier and want to venture off the beaten path, try backcountry skiing and discover a side of the popular resort you never knew existed. Zermatt, Switzerland: If a traditional resort and experience is what you’re after, then you couldn’t do much better than Zermatt in Switzerland. Boasting a beautiful fairy tale Swiss village, Zermatt also is perfect for any level of skier thanks to its wide range of slopes. Surprisingly isolated, Zermatt is everything a ski resort should be with a choice of tasty restaurants and cosy bars to replenish energy levels after a busy day zipping down the mountain side. TIP: Don’t forget to keep your foreign exchange protected from the elements with a waterproof money belt just in case you take a tumble! St Anton, Austria: As famous for its nightlife as much as its skiing, St Anton has a reputation for being the liveliest resort in Europe, this doesn’t mean it lacks in skiing pedigree though - the resort held the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2001. TIP: For extra peace of mind, consider a mixture of travel money and travellers cheques when arranging your currency exchange. Sierra Nevada, Spain: Though Spain is not seen as a traditional skiing destination, Sierra Nevada hosted the 1996 Ski World Championships. With all courses designed by European and American experts there is a fantastic selection, whether novice or pro. Sierra Nevada is also known for being one of the world’s best snowboarding resorts. TIP: While the après ski in the resort is plentiful, venture down the mountainside to taste tapas in Granada – the Moorish city is just a short drive away. Bankso, Bulgaria: A newbie to the ski scene, Bansko is a great budget choice and interesting alternative to the traditional Alpine retreats. Take some time before or after hitting the slopes to explore the surrounding areas and enjoy a taste of Bulgaria’s rich culture. TIP: Bankso is the best developed of Bulgaria’s ski resorts so makes a great base for your first visit to the country. It also has the best snow record and longest season in the country, typically from December to May so can be enjoyed well into the New Year. Bjelolasica, Croatia: There are nine pistes in Bjelolasica including one black and six red runs. Stunningly beautiful with a picture perfect Adriatic coastline, if you’ve holidayed in Croatia previously it will likely have been a sun-drenched summer escape. There is a developing ski culture though and now is a great time to experience the birth of the region’s newest resorts before they become over popular. TIP: There are five other ski resorts within 100km of Bjelolasica – why not arrange your own multi centre holiday to get a real taste of Croatia? Whistler, Canada: Spectacular mountain views and secluded lakeside retreats make Whistler a real snow lovers dream. Consistently ranked the top ski and board resort in North America, Whistler has hosted both the Olympic and Paralympics games. The two mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb boast over 8000 acres of ski runs and winter activities – perfect for even the most adventurous of holiday makers. TIP: You can fly in to Seattle and then take the train up to British Columbia, enjoying beautiful scenery en route. Don’t forget to order both US dollars and Canadian dollars when arranging your travel money if you do want to fly to the USA before going on to Canada. Aspen, USA: One of the best known ski resorts in the world, Aspen has plenty of choice with four separate ski areas and three resorts. The largest ski resort is Snowmass, which was recently redeveloped to offer a huge choice of eating establishments and hotel accommodation. The town of Aspen itself is the ski resort from the gilded age with some of the most expensive real estate to be found anywhere in the United States. TIP: Try and book for late December or early January when the A-List celebrity crowd are in town to ski and ring in the New Year in style.
