Oct. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- South Africa's pharmaceutical market was valued at ZAR20.4bn (US$2.4bn) in 2009. By 2014, we forecast that drug spending in the country will reach ZAR31.7bn (US$5.2bn), experiencing a 2009-2014 compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.2% in local currency terms and 16.6% in US dollar terms. Over the extended 2009-2019 forecast period, we calculate that drugs spending will reach ZAR47.4bn (US$10.0bn), equating to a CAGR of 8.8% in local currency terms and 15.2% in US dollar terms.

South Africa's pharmaceutical business environment is rated as the second strongest in the Middle East and Africa region according to BMI's Q410 rankings. The country has a large pharmaceutical market with significant growth potential and this is reflected in the high score for the industry rewards indicator. A relatively stable political and economic environment means that South Africa also scores highly for the country risk indicator.

The country has Africa's strongest domestic pharmaceutical industry, with companies increasingly looking to neighbouring markets and further afield for growth. Pending shareholder approval and the completion of due diligence, South Africa's largest pharmaceutical company, Aspen, will acquire Australian pharmaceutical company Sigma's generic drug business for AUD900mn (US$811mn) in cash. The move represents further diversification from Aspen's core South African operations. Its home market's contribution to the total sales decreased from 77% in June 2008 to 56% in June 2009.

South Africa has a ZAR2bn (US$280mn) clinical research industry, largely focused on clinical trials of HIV/AIDS treatments. Multinational firms, including the US-based clinical research organisations (CROs) Parexel and Quintiles, dominate the market, although a number of local players such as Triclinium are emerging, encouraged by government support for the local biotech industry.

The country's public healthcare system continues to function in a state of disarray, with many hospitals understaffed or undersupplied with the appropriate medicines and equipment. In August 2010, it was reported that HIV and tuberculosis patients in the Eastern Cape province had not been receiving drugs as the local health department had not paid suppliers. Since March 2010, hospitals and clinics have been struggling to maintain adequate amounts of drugs, including antiretrovirals (ARV), because unpaid service providers have stopped supplies.
