Oct. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- Mayor Bernie Platt, of Cherry Hill, will be dedicating a tree and plague on October 25, 2010 at 4 pm at DeCou Park . The dedication is in memory of Jared Steven Grossman who died on March 23, 2010 after a five year battle with Rhabdomyosarcoma. Mr. Grossman was 26 years old at the time of his death and was a resident of Cherry Hill and a graduate of Cherry Hill High School East and Rowan University.   DeCou Park,  located at the corner of Evesham Road and Cooper Road,  was chosen because Mr. Grossman played basketball there for many years and the park was adjacent to the Cherry Hill Atlantic Little League Baseball field which Mr. Grossman was also a player for.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS)  is one of 50 Sarcoma cancers which can affect people of all ages and backgrounds.   RMS targets children from birth to fifteen and the disease is being seen increasingly in the young adult population.   Unlike other cancers, such as breast or colon,  the survival rate for RMS had not improved over the last 20 years.   The five year survival rate is around 50% for localized tumors and less than 20%  for metastatic or recurrent disease.  Part of the reason for the high mortality rate is due to the current treatments of this cancer.  The standard protocol involves several months of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.   Due to the ages of the patients,  many succumb to the chemotherapy that kills healthy cells as well as diseased ones and temporarily wipes out the bodies' immune system. Even a slight exposure to a cold can lead to a serious condition called "Neutropenia" where the lack of white blood cells can lead to infection and death if not treated with high doses of antibiotics and patient isolation.
Approximately 11,000 new cases of Sarcoma are seen each year and since this number is much smaller than other cancers,  RMS is considered an 'orphan' disease and funding sources are limited.

Jared's parents,  Robyn and Ray Grossman of Cherry Hill,   have started a non-profit charity to help fund research into finding new, innovative treatments for RMS and other Sarcomas that do not depend on the toxic chemotherapy drugs currently used.   They are searching and meeting with researchers throughout the country in this mission.  Thus far they have found two facilities that meet their criteria and are in communications with other hospitals , both locally and as far a California and Oregon.   Their organization's website is "http://jaredsjuggernaut.org" .   Their email is "  admin@jaredjuggernaut.org.

Local religious and civic leaders will be invited to attend the dedication and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.   A local oncologist is being recruited to answer questions about RMS or any othe Sarcomas.
