Oct. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- Dr. Pati Abhay Kumar decribes, The ginkgo is the world’s oldest living tree, a species whose existence can be traced back over 200 million years. For this reason the ginkgo is often referred to as a “living fossil.” Even individual trees may live as long as 1,000 years.
The ginkgo is associated with longevity and it has incredible resistance to environmental factors. It also appears that taking a concentrated extract of ginkgo biloba leaves may promote longevity and resistance to aging in humans.
Ginkgo’s pharmacological activity is due to its high content of terpenes, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins and ginkgo heterosides (flavoglycosides). A gingko biloba extract (GBE) has demonstrated remarkable pharmacological action on different parts of the circulatory and nervous system (arteries, capillaries, veins, and heart). Its effects include enhancement of energy, increase of cellular glucose intake, and inhibiting of platelet aggregation, Dr,Abhay Kumar Pati, Hayward, CA, USA
Ginkgo biloba extract also promotes radical scavenging activity, increased blood flow to the brain, and improved transmission of nerve signals. In clinical trials patients with chronic cerebral arterial insufficiency and / or peripheral arterial insufficiency responded favorably to ginkgo biloba extract . Furthermore, since GBE improves some aspects of neural transmission, it may be effective in certain cases of senility, including the early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Ginkgo Biloba Extract in Chronic Cerebral Vascular Insufficiency
In a large open trial involving 112 geriatric patients with chronic cerebral insufficiency, GBE, at 120mg per day, displayed a statistically significant regression of the major cerebral vascular insufficiency symptoms. These symptoms includes: short term memory loss, vertigo, headache, ringing in the ears, lack of vigilance, and depression.
Symptoms of decreased cerebral blood flow are extremely common in the senior population due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The significant regression of these symptoms offered by ginkgo biloba suggests that vascular insufficiency may be the major causative factor accounting for “age-related cerebral disorders.” It appears that the improved cerebral blood flow from ginkgo biloba provides an increase in oxygen and glucose supplied to the brain. This offers relief from the presumed side effects of aging and may offer significant protection against development of these symptoms.
Improved Mental Performance
Ginkgo biloba extract has been shown in clinical studies to increase the rate at which information is transmitted at the nerve cell level. In Hindmarch and Subhan’s double-blind study, the time of reaction even in healthy young women performing a memory test was significantly improved after administration of GBE.
In another double-blind clinical study, ginkgo biloba extract was shown to produce restoration of vigilance to approximately normal levels together with improved mental performance, in elderly patients. The findings at the behavioral level correlate with improvements in EEG tracings. The patients with a more unfavorable initial situation (as measure in resting EEG activity) displayed the greatest improvement. The conclusion of the study was: “The results show that chronic GBE medication has a positive effect in geriatric subjects with deterioration of mental performance and vigilance. This effect is reflected at the behavioral level.”
Ginkgo biloba extract may be of great benefit in many cases of senility, including Alzheimer’s disease. GBE has been shown to normalize the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the hippocampus of aged animals and to increase cholinergic transmission.
Peripheral Arterial Insufficiency
Gingko biloba extract has a significant scavenging effect on free radicals. This factor, combined with its vasodilator ability and its ability to increase metabolic processes during decreased blood supply suggest that GBE may have clinical efficacy in cases of obliterative arterial disease and other causes of arterial insufficiency.
In a double-blind randomized clinical trial, two groups of patients with peripheral arterial insufficiency of the leg were studied. One group was given GBE, while the other was given a placebo. Ginkgo biloba extract demonstrated superior results. Measurements of pain-free walking distance and maximum walking distance increased dramatically. Plethysmographic and doppler ultrasound measurements (after exercise) were also increased, reflecting and increased blood flow through the affected limb.
The significance of the above findings on improved blood flow is considerable. Currently, muscular rehabilitation and elimination of risk factors (smoking, overweight condition, etc.) are the basis for medical treatment of patients suffering from peripheral arterial insufficiency. The beneficial effect of such therapy on walking tolerance has not been related to an improved perfusion of the limb, and over time results are limited. Therefore, muscular rehabilitation and the elimination of risk factors are not sufficient. However, the above study showed ginkgo biloba extract actually improved the flow of blood in the limb and thereby improved walked comfort; this indicates that it is the supplement of choice in cases of peripheral arterial insufficiency. That also includes other peripheral arterial insufficiency. That also includes other peripheral vascular disorders, such as diabetic peripheral vascular disease, Raynaud’s syndrome, acrocyanosis, and postphlebitis syndrome.
SUMMARY
Ginkgo biloba extract offers effective treatments for signs and symptoms of arterial insufficiency. This is confirmed by clinical studies in cases of cerebral arterial insufficiency and peripheral arterial insufficiency. GBE may lessen many common complaints of the geriatric population, such as dizziness, ringing in the ears, depression, short-term memory loss, and intermittent claudication (cramping in the legs caused by poor circulation). By improving neural transmission, ginkgo biloba extract may also improve mental functions in elderly patients displaying signs of senility. This extract may offer significant protective action against development of Alzheimer’s Disease and strokes. Further studies may indicate that GBE is of benefit as a vasodilator in cases of angina, as an inotropic agent in congestive heart failure, and as a mood-elevating substance in depression.
Dosage
The standard dose of GBE is 40mg, three times a day. There have not been any reports of significant adverse reactions at this level of dosage, nor in patients ingesting as much as 600mg in one dose. Mild adverse reactions, though quite rare, have been reported; these include gastrointestinal upset and headache.
