For More Water, Just Add Starlight!

Sept. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Vista, CA – Scientists were surprised by a recent finding that indicates ultraviolet starlight plays an essential role in creating water in space. This important discovery was recently reported by the Herschel Science Centre Observatory, which is operated by the European Space Agency.

According to the report, astronomers at the observatory discovered an unexpected cloud of water vapor surrounding a star known as IRC+10216. This red giant is hundreds of times our sun's size, although it is only a few times its mass.

Once this cloud of water vapor was discovered, scientists and astronomers began to search for its source immediately.

“Stars like IRC+10216 are known as carbon stars and are thought not to make much water,” states the report. “Initially it was suspected that the star’s heat must be evaporating comets to produce the water.”

Further investigation, however, has revealed a more surprising source for the cloud.

Apparently, the ultraviolet starlight that comes from surrounding stars is able to break up molecules such as carbon monoxide and silicon monoxide, releasing oxygen atoms within the star. The oxygen atoms then attach themselves to hydrogen molecules, forming water.

Scientists are now trying to discover if this same water-making process is occurring around other stars and if this discovery might have applications here on earth.

“Thanks to these findings, we know now that at least one secret ingredient for making water is ultraviolet light from surrounding stars,” says Klaus Reichardt, Founder and CEO of Waterless Co. LLC. “Whether scientists can take this knowledge and use it to address the growing water crisis here on Earth is something we must wait and see.”
