Follow on Google News | Arrecife - The Capital City with a Huge PuddleA look at the amazing capital city of Lanzarote and everything it has to offer.
By: VacationRentalPeople It is a lively port town which serves loads of other Islands in Europe and mainland Africa, and this partly shapes the structure. For many centuries it has been the main port gateway to the island thanks to its proximity to the old capital and its deep water harbour at Los Marmoles, which is home to the city's ferry and container ports. During the 17th and 18th centuries the ports of the canary islands, especially Lanzarote, were constantly under pirate attacks and Arrecife was raided regularly. In fact Teguise was strategically better placed to handle this threat which is why had the title of capital city for over 400 years but the importance of maritime trade grew too much. Today the port in Arrecife houses the biggest fishing fleet in the Canary Islands and the legacy of these pirate raids can still be seen in the two castles that stand guard over Arrecife's natural harbour. At one time the city was rather optimistically called 'The Venice of the Atlantic', which is far from the truth as Arrecife doesn't offer much in terms of classic colonial architecture or waterways with gondoliers going through it. But the Arrecife has an aesthetically pleasing hub that is centred around El Charco, also known as the pudding this is a giant pool of sea water, that enters the city as a unique and beautiful natural lake that is surrounded by fishermen's houses white. The Grand Hotel is the tallest building on Lanzarote and this was considered a 'burnt-out' eyesore of the city for many years, scarring the otherwise considered picturesque seafront around the city's beach, Playa El Reducto. But it recently had a renovation and now is considered the symbol of the city regeneration. At the top of the hotel is a restaurant which possibly has the best views of the city. Developers sneaked this building up in the 1960's whilst Cesar Manrique was away studying in New York and on his return to the city the construction was halted. Over the years there were wrangles over the demolition and future use of the building which went on for many years but the building now serves its original purpose as a five star hotel. But you don't have to stay there as Arrecife has some of the nicest Lanzarote villas.
