Who offers private, secure free email accounts?

Secure email service providers often promote “private, secure free email accounts”. But watch out and check the details and features when comparing services!

Aug. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Secure email service providers sometimes claim to offer “private, secure free email accounts”. But as more providers tackle the market for secure mail, customers may want to compare them by features as well as price.

To start with, emails are only entirely secure when messages are directly sender-to-recipient encrypted, cannot be read by unauthorized individuals and do not leave any traces on the host machines. Hence, encryption between servers only is entirely insufficient.

Next, all required processes for transmitting encrypted emails should be integrated in one single service: The requirement of additional tools, such as transmission of codes via mobile phones to be able to access emails, is not only inconvenient, but also a security threat.

And then: The sender of a mail must be able to decide what the recipient is allowed to do with a message. What would it help, if the transmission of a message were safe, but then the recipient can forward, print or copy the content of a message and pass it on. The sender must have ultimate control and monitoring authority about each message sent.

In regards to price, most secure service providers are actually not for free. Price models are either based on a fee per message or have a packaged fee, which can be upgraded according to the amount of messages sent or data volume used.

One of the few established secure email service providers which is actually entirely for free is Opolis Secure Mail (http://www.opolis.eu).

Opolis was developed to optimally serve customer needs in regards to secure email and document messaging: All messages and attached documents are point-to-point encrypted in a fully integrated service and can therefore not be read by unauthorized individuals. Opolis emails are sent without delay. And, the sender can monitor and follow the entire path of a message and therefore immediately sees if and when the recipient has opened the mail and the attached document.

Opolis also includes other valuable features, such as:  The sender decides if and how the recipient can further process a message. Therefore, the sender decides whether the recipient may copy, print, respond to or forward a message or not. And, there is an attachment size limit of 125MB (way more than the usual 10-15MB with standard email) which should easily meet current demands.

Opolis is- as mentioned - for free and merely requires that both, the sender and the recipient are Opolis users. The registration process takes approximately 5 minutes.
