Play on day two has been delayed due to high winds.

The horn was sounded when gales sweeping in off the North Sea approached 40 miles-per-hour.

Players have been ordered to retain positions for the time being, with the R&A hoping the weather will calm down shortly.

R&A Director of Rules David Rickman said: “The odd ball moving on the green happens, but we had problems at seven, ten, 11, 12 and 13.

“When you have a series of incidents happening in quick succession then you have to halt play, I’m afraid.”

Among the relieved group of players already in are clubhouse leader Louis Oosthuizen and American Phil Mickelson, who birdied the 18th which could sneak him past the cut.

“I should be safe right now, but it depends on how the conditions are for the other players,” he said.

“I like playing in winds because you can play along the ground. You’re always in contention at St Andrews.”

A clearly frustrated Martin Kaymer added: “I had to play in those conditions so I don’t know why they’ve stopped.

“We are lucky the greens are slow or they would have suspended play two or three hours ago.”
