Plant Your Butts Here Campaign

July 17, 2010 - PRLog -- Even kids can make a big difference. Huakailani School has launched the "Plant Your Butt Here" campaign.

As part of the City and County of Honolulu's Adopt-a-Block program, Huakailani School has adopted Hekili Street and Hamakua Drive for their litter patrol. So far this year, they have not only removed trash but 3,388 cigarette butts from the area.

Tossed into street gutters, grassy medians  and on the shoulders of Hekili Street & Hamakua Drive, cigarette butts are fire hazards and can be eaten by area wildlife. The cigarette butts area also very likely to travel through storm drains and enter the local watershed, where they can travel all the way to the Kailua Bay. The chemicals from discarded cigarette butts are capable of leaching into surrounding waters of Hamakua Stream where they can pollute water and harm aquatic life.

Although only ages 4- 10, Huakailani students are proactive "Environmental Heroes" who know they can make a difference.  The Huakailani Girls have decorated whimsical and creative "Plant Your Butts Here"  planters. The planters will be donated to supporting businesses in the community. Together, the girls hope to see a reduction in the number of butts found littering the area on upcoming litter clean-up days.

Pali Lanes, Big City Diner, Midas and Ohana Karaoke have all joined forces with Huakailani School to reduce the number of cigarette butts that are found in the area.

The bins are all painted and are ready to be filled with sand. The girls will be delivering the "Cigarette Butt Planters" to the businesses on Monday, July 19, 2010.  The future is in good hands with students like the Huakailani Girls.
