Egypt Tourism Report Q3 2010: New research report available at Fast Market ResearchFast Market Research recommends "Egypt Tourism Report Q3 2010" from Business Monitor International, now available
After improvement in the rate of decline in foreign tourist arrivals during the first nine months of last year, followed by positive growth in Q409, the outturn for the year as a whole was a relatively modest decline in arrivals of just 2.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) to an estimated 12.4mn people. Indeed, the tourism sector has proven surprisingly resilient - compared with the global downturn - partly due to government measures to assist the sector. Moreover, foreign tourist arrivals increased a marked 29% y-o-y to 3.46mn in the first quarter of 2010 (tourism revenue was up 24% y-o-y to US$2.7bn). Although this is a very healthy rebound in arrivals, it should been seen in the context of a low base in Q109 (during which there was a 12% y-o-y fall in arrivals). Bird Flu Update According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of April 2010, Egypt had confirmed 34 human deaths caused from the H5N1 virus (bird flu) - up from 30 since our previous report - out of 109 (previously 99) known human infections in the country, the largest number outside Asia. The data show that infections are on the rise, with 39 people infected during 2009. Forecast Scenario BMI believes that the tourism sector will rebound this year (supported by recent data), although conditions are likely to remain difficult. In line with a recovery in tourism in Q409 and strong growth in Q110, we have revised up our growth forecast this quarter for foreign visitor arrivals in 2010 to 8% y-o-y. This should be followed by stronger growth from 2011 as economic recovery in key source markets - especially the eurozone, Russia and Central and Eastern Europe and the UK - gets under way. BMI, however, forecasts modest appreciation of the Egyptian pound against the euro and the US dollar in the short term, eroding some of the sector's competitiveness. Relatively high consumer price inflation (rising to 13.6% y-o-y in January 2010) is also a short-term worry for the tourism industry. Cairo International Airport After strong growth in passengers numbers at Cairo International Airport in recent years (including notable growth of 16.7% and 14.2% y-o-y in 2007 and 2008, respectively) EgyptAir In April 2010, EgyptAir began normal flight operations to European airports, following disruptions caused by the Icelandic volcano eruption. In FY08/09, the airline carried over 6.8mn scheduled passengers, an annual increase of just 2% (after 17% y-o-y growth in the previous year). This was largely due to a 24% y-o-y fall in domestic traffic - following the expansion of EgyptAir Express (a subsidiary of EgyptAir) from summer 2008. International passenger numbers, meanwhile, rose a favourable 10% yo- y. Air Arabia Egypt After receiving an operating certificate from the Egyptian authorities, Air Arabia Egypt will begin operations in June 2010, commencing with flights from Alexandria to Khartoum and Kuwait. The airline was formed by a joint venture between Travco Group, the Middle East's largest travel and hospitality group, and UAE-based (Sharjah) Air Arabia.
