While early on a victory for the Outback was anything but guaranteed, driving truly was believing for the judges.  Their hearts and minds were won once they got behind the wheel of the Outback.  That this Subaru offering stayed true to the “utility” in the acronym "SUV", while adding "refinement, fuel-frugality, and easy access of wagons and sedans" earned the Outback some points among the judges.

This year’s Outback also added a tremendous amount of interior space, legroom, headroom, and cargo capacity.  Inside, the Outback grew by seven percent due largely to a raised roof, while rear-seat legroom stretched out four inches.  Motor Trend's inspection also found that cargo capacity bested even classic SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and new entrants into the crossover segment like the Toyota Venza.
