May 19, 2010 - PRLog -- The UK's best friends are found up North, according to a recent survey of 1,529 people by the UK's leading online takeaway website, www.Just-Eat.co.uk, where more than three quarters of people admitted that their mates were 'the best in the UK'.

The study asked a number of questions to determine which city had the best friends in the UK, and put together a top ten based on the results.

The survey included a number of questions, such as 'if you were having financial difficulty, would your friends lend you money?', 'if you were stranded without cash, would your friends pick you up?' and 'how long have you had your current main circle of friends?', before taking each answer into account and applying it to the location of the respondents.

More than three fifths, 63%, of people from Leeds said they thought their friends would help them out if they needed a loan, compared to people in London, where just 19% thought their friends would.

Takeaway website http://www.Just-Eat.co.uk, which prides itself on having a great night in with a takeaway and your friends, commissioned the research in a bid to find out how best to market in specific areas across the UK.

Eight Northern cities and towns made the top ten, whilst Southampton was the sole Southern representative, suggesting that friends from the north are better than their southern counterparts.

When asked the question, 'Would you prefer to spend time with your friends over your partner?' 42% of Northern respondents claimed that they would, compared to just 13% of Southerners.

The top ten cities with the 'best mates' in the UK, based on the percentage of respondents who said they had never fallen out with their close friends are;

1.    Leeds - 92%
2.    Manchester - 88%
3.    Liverpool - 84%
4.    Sheffield - 79%
5.    Birmingham - 71%
6.    Newcastle - 66%
7.    Burnley - 63%
8.    Blackburn - 59%
9.    Hull - 58%
10.  Southampton - 55%

David Buttress, Managing Director of http://www.Just-Eat.co.uk had the following to say,

"The hurried way of life in the South, particularly as you get closer to London, doesn't lend itself well to friendliness, and these results confirm this.

"Just-Eat.co.uk is all about providing a social moment for our customers, whether they're ordering takeaway food in to share with friends, family, colleagues or other loved ones. This survey demonstrates how strong the bonds are between friends across the country, something that is especially important to us, given the way food can bring people together."
