"No Numbers: Identity beyond Measure" takes Hollywood to Task at Awareness Festival

Hollywood was built on the same dreams that eating disorders are made of. Actress and former model, Dena Ashbaugh, shares her story of a 20-year recovery from anorexia and how movie magic can both counter media and help reclaim life beyond measure.

May 17, 2010 - PRLog -- Having survived a 20-year struggle with anorexia, Dena Ashbaugh, Vancouver actress and former international model created, "No Numbers: Identity beyond measure", a documentary on recovery from disordered eating that features the personal stories of three women who use the self-creating aspects of film to move past the definitions and practices of disordered eating to find their own voices. "No Numbers" screens in West Hollywood this Saturday, May 22nd at 8pm at the Heaven on Earth Gallery, 7122 Beverly Blvd., as part of the Awareness Festival (http://awarenessfestival.healoneworld.com/). The film questions social ideals that make us feel we never quite measure up and promotes that feeling good about oneself is an intrinsic human right that should never be denied.

Given a recent survey found one in 10 parents would abort a child if they knew it had a genetic tendency to be obese, as well as statistics showing that 80% -90% of women dislike the size of and shape of their bodies, the importance of developing a healthy relationship with ourselves and our bodies is essential.

“No Numbers” sets out to instigate such change and is succeeding. Stacey Hamilton-Davies, who battles anorexia, comments. “Finally a story that is told from people that are on or have been on the inside of an eating disorder! As someone in recovery, I am both overwhelmed and in awe of those that have bravely and honestly told their stories. Thank you for giving me strength to continue on my journey towards recovery and health.”

“No Numbers” reminds us, “As we become aware of ourselves as storytellers, we realize that what we imagine about ourselves is a story. And when we know all this, we can use our stories to heal and make ourselves whole. ”
