May 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Leading network security provider, DeepNines Technologies, today announced the latest Internet Usage and Threats Report from its DeepNines Security Labs that contains staggering statistics on Internet usage in K12 schools across the U.S. for the first quarter of 2010.  The factual data is garnered from its industry-first, proprietary Internet Security Assessment, which provides critical information on security gaps, threats and risks entering and leaving the network.

DeepNines Security Labs measured the ISA findings from January 1, 2010 through March 31, 2010 to accurately show real-world Web consumption, threats, usage and risks.  The information was gathered from a variety of live environments from schools of various sizes and locations.  DeepNines Internet Security Assessment is a comprehensive network inspection and evaluation that provides organizations with complete Internet traffic visibility by scanning all content, applications and threats that enter and exit the network.  The results were complied based on information from Q1 2010.

DeepNines Security Lab Results of the Internet Usage and Threats Report
•   33% of Internet use (bandwidth) is used on social networking
•   Streaming media represents significant risk to malware and other network threats
•   23% of Web use is used on external proxies
•   Students top destination online is gaming sites (28%) with entertainment second (21%)
•   Advertisements are consuming 18% of bandwidth
•   Most Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) violations occur within blogs

“The Internet Usage and Threats Q1 2010 report provides remarkable insights into real-world networks for the K12 market.  Our goal is to educate Education institutions on what is actually occurring in networks of their peers’ presently, not simply providing just the typical warnings that malware and other threats happen and are growing,” said Shawn Eldridge, vice president of marketing and products at DeepNines.  “The Internet Security Assessment enables DeepNines Security Labs this level of insight sophistication that will benefit everyone.”

“I just used the detailed reporting to identify students running new p2p applications,” said Richard Tollett, technology director at Cotulla ISD.  “Since putting DeepNines in, my bandwidth control ability gave me back control of my network.”
