May 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Excitement is in the air with graduation around the corner. But, students are entering the job queue at a revolutionary time when health care reform, recession, and inflation are all a part of everyone’s conversation. What the impact will be on a new graduate’s career is still up to conjecture. But, most would agree that change will surely happen. As employment opportunities get tighter and tighter, being career focused by creating a personal website could land job seekers the best position in a tight marketplace.

Students nationwide are realizing the importance of creating a personal site. “With tuition rising at a rate of 7% each year, prospective graduates realize that they need to up their game in order to obtain employment after graduation. The economy has shown us that you aren’t guaranteed a job simply because you have a degree.”, says Felicia Chinelo, owner of Chinelo Designs, a web design and consulting firm in Nashville, Tennessee that specializes in individual sites.  According to the National Center on Educational Statistics, the average undergraduate owes $23,000 upon graduation, and the average graduate student owes $38,000. The cost may be even higher for those in the medical and law professions. “If you’re a recent graduate, having a personal website is a novel way to create your own brand. By creating a personal site, you could land employment quicker and get on track towards diminishing that debt”, says Chinelo.

Personal websites are no longer for families and photos. “Having my own website will help me to showcase my research experience” says Sandra Bogle, a senior biochemistry major at Tennessee State University. “I’m researching the effects of prenatal alcohol on neuronal growth, and want to use the website for my medical school application.” The positive effects of having a professional website stem beyond the short term and can be measured over an extended period of time. Unlike Myspace and Facebook accounts, professional websites profile the person’s accomplishments, skills, and other aspects of their educational career that they may not have included in their résumé. In short, they aid applicants in presenting their best to prospective employers. The future of the economy in America may seem a little hazy with all of the debate, controversy, and political changes. But, with a professional website, a graduate can pave their way to a clearer future.
