April 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Des Plaines, Illinois, April 27, 2010 – Addition Technology, Inc., the maker of AlphaSphere™ orbital implant, AlphaCor™ artificial cornea and Intacs® corneal implants announced today that the new AlphaSphere Orbital Implant ophthalmic device has been awarded the 2010 Alpha Award® for Innovation In Engineering & Technology presented by the Engineering Society of Detroit. The Society is celebrating their 115th year and presents the Alpha Award® to recognize creative ideas that generate innovative solutions in engineering and technology.

“We are very pleased to have been selected for this prestigious award”, stated Art Brodie, Executive Vice President, Business Development. “We view the engineering, materials and design of the AlphaSphere device to be a quantum leap forward in orbital implant technology.  Although AlphaSphere was only launched in the second half of 2009, we have already seen surgeons at Bascom Palmer, Yale and Mass Eye & Ear to name a few begin to use the device, and though the results are short-term, the light-weight, smooth and bio-integratable  characteristics have generated very favorable feedback.”

“At Bascom Palmer, we deal will many difficult cases and have found AlphaSphere to incorporate many of the features surgeons desire in such a device.  It is easy to surgically implant, comfortable for the patient, offers exceptional motility and the ability to bio-integrate into the eye” stated Wendy Lee, M.D., Assistant Professor Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, Orbit and Oncology.

The AlphaSphere™ orbital implant is a new entry into an historical market that dates back to 1884. It is the first orbital implant device made from a novel poly-HEMA bio-material (PHEMA) that biointegrates into the eye socket capsule yet resists bio-integration in its posterior hemisphere to provide superior motility to a prosthetic eye. Since the majority of its composition is water, AlphaSphere’s ability to provide compliance in matching natural organ tissue is unique in comparison to all other orbital implant products due to its soft, smooth and pliable exterior. A major feature of the AlphaSphere is the ability to directly suture into the endo-skeletal, anterior surface. Addition Technology supplies, at no extra cost, custom designed sutures to facilitate this process. The implant is shipped sterile, ready to use with no pre-surgical preparation or wrapping required, it has 3-year dating and comes in seven sizes, 1.0mm increments 16-22mm. The Company provides a free demo unit with suture for orientation with first cases. Orders can be directly placed at (866)-658-2709.  Visit www.AdditionTechnology.com for more information.
