One of the first questions people ask when they are looking to install solar panelsis what is the cost? The best way to answer this is to look at what types of systems are available and then look at how you can estimate the number of solar panels you may need.
The two types of solar panels systems on the market are;
a) Solar thermal (hot water) panels - these are the larger of the panels on the market measuring 2.2m2. They use glycol which circulates in the panel, which is then pumped to the cylinder to heat the water.]
b) Solar PV (electricity) - these are smaller panels. They convert daylight into electricity.

To look at the cost of installing solar thermal panels, you need to look at the number of people in your house and how much hot water you need. allow 50l of water per person, so for a 4 person house, you need 2panels and a 210 L cylinder. Cost for this is around £5-£6,000.

The cost of installing solar pv depends on how many kw you want to generate. A typical house uses around 4kW of electricity per year. So if you want to produce half your electricity from solar, you need a 2KW system. Costs per kW are typically around £6,000 per kW.
