HONG KONG, 22 Mar, 2010 – Advanced Card Systems Ltd. (ACS, wholly owned subsidiary of Advanced Card Systems Holdings Ltd., SEHK: 8210), Asia Pacific's number one supplier of PC-linked smart card readers, participated as an exhibitor and a speaker in the IC Card World 2010 held at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center “Tokyo Big Sight” from 9 to 12 Mar, 2010. ACS Sales Director, Mr. Gilbert Leung, headed the showcase for the ACR122 Series, ACS’s NFC contactless smart card reader product line, and delivered a speech in the event’s NFC Forum entitled “Moving Towards NFC in 2010.”

Organized since 1999 by Nikkei Inc., IC Card World is a huge smart card and RFID event in Japan that serves as an avenue for smart card industry players to show their innovative products and exchange dialogue for the industry’s overall progress. Alongside organizing the exhibition, Nikkei collaborated with the Asia Pacific Smart Association (APSCA) to hold an NFC Forum, in which ACS had, for three years in a row, been invited to attend as speakers. This year, the forum aimed to discuss major hurdles that companies need to overcome for a widespread implementation of NFC infrastructures and services. ACS’s representative, Mr. Gilbert Leung, contributed in the discussion with a presentation about how smart card readers leverage with current NFC applications.

Gilbert began his presentation with a background on the differences between traditional contactless readers and NFC readers, followed by a discussion on the factors to be considered when developing an NFC device. Subsequently, he cited some actual NFC-based projects to show the advantages of using NFC over traditional contactless technology.

“With NFC, smart card readers are now not only capable of performing read or write functions, but also of performing card emulation and Peer to Peer (P2P) functions supporting vast applications, such as e-purse payments, top-up solutions, and website promotion via an NFC phone, which are currently gaining huge public interest,” said Gilbert. “At ACS, we recognize this reality and develop products to explore the immense potential of the NFC market. Our ACR122U NFC Smart Card Reader is the world’s first CCID-compliant NFC reader, and we are introducing more innovative products, such as ACR122T, ACR122S and ACR122L, for this growing market in this exhibition.”

Proving to be a highly successful event, IC Card World was attended by over 250,000 visitors in the smart card industry. Meanwhile, around 100 delegates participated in the NFC Forum, and they were each given ACS’s ACR122T NFC Contactless Smart Card Reader Software Development Kit for their participation.
