State kept body almost a year
Judge inquires how examiner handles remains

How many bodies does the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have on ice? Bridgeport's probate judge wants to know.

After testimony in a recent court case revealed that a Bridgeport man's body was kept at the Farmington Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for 10 months, Judge Paul Ganim is demanding to know why.

"Personally, I find it very disturbing that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner would keep a decedent's remains on ice for more than 10 months before contacting someone to claim the remains and provide the decedent with a proper burial," Ganim wrote in a letter to Chief Medical Examiner

"I think it is completely unreasonable that it took more than 10 months to contact someone to claim the decedent's remains. If there is any information to the contrary, please advise," he wrote.

Ganim is also requesting, under the state Freedom of Information Act, the names of all unclaimed bodies at the medical examiner's facilities; names of funeral homes or other entities that were given custody of unclaimed bodies; and the average time unclaimed bodies have remained in the office.

A spokesman for the medical examiner said Carver had read Ganim's letter Tuesday morning. However, Carver did not return repeated calls for comment.
